How to Qualify for a Low Mileage Discount

Woman holding car keysSaving money on auto insurance is always a good thing. The cost you pay generally represents the way you use your car. If you use it extensively, you need ample coverage. You are at a higher risk of being in an accident.

But, what if you do not drive it often? It could be your second vehicle. It could be you no longer drive very much. In these cases, you may qualify for a low mileage discount.

What Does Your Car Insurance Require?

Most auto insurance companies will offer a low mileage discount. How many miles this is differs from one provider to the next.

It is best to discuss your driving habits with your agent at length. Most of the time, those who commute to work or school will not qualify. It is not exactly how many miles, but often how frequently you drive as well. Those on the road often may still need ample coverage. Again, it is about the amount of risk present.

Most insurers will offer a low mileage discount to those who drive between 7,500 and 15,000 miles each year. Again, this ranges from one provider to the next.

How Do You Determine Mileage?

Take a look at your mileage on your vehicle. For the next month, track how many miles you drive the car. Then, multiply this by 12. This provides you with roughly an annual figure. If you are under 15,000 miles, let your auto insurance agent know. It could help you save money on your insurance.

Most often, this is an average. Let’s say you decide to take a trip in the middle of the summer. Every other month, you meet the low mileage goals. Most auto insurance companies recognize this. They will allow you to maintain the discount.

Keep in mind, some insurers now use technology to track mileage. Some offer discount programs for those drivers who have on-board GPS systems. The system connects to the insurer’s app. The app records how many miles you travel. This helps verify you are a low mileage driver. It can help you to qualify for significant discounts as well.

Discuss your driving habits with your VA auto insurance provider. Be sure your car insurance policy matches how you drive your car. This helps ensure you always have the coverage you need. And, it might help you save on your insurance.
